Sing Out Toledo, fresh from 'Garden Party,' has reunion

by Jeff Woodard

Toledo Sing Out Toledo!, hopeful six months ago of taking its fourth-year mixed chorus to GALA Choruses Festival 2000 in San Jose, will instead be staying closer to home this summer.

"We just didn't have the commitment from an adequate number of singers," says Becky Roth, chair of the group's board of trustees, "and those who did want to go would not have produced anything approaching a balanced sound. We even considered joining forces with OutLoud, a sister chorus in Ann Arbor [Michigan], but the balance was still lacking.”

Not lacking, however, has been the steady progress that the 20-member group from northwest Ohio continues to make.

Noting the success of its "Garden Party" concert in May, Roth says, "We've grown a lot musically in the last year, and this concert was the proof-we've never sounded better."

In two performances, the chorus sang of springtime, flowers, rainbows--and new love-in celebration of what Roth terms "Vermont's courageous civil-union legislation."

While continuing to encourage new membership and future growth, Sing Out Toledo! also has an eye on the past: An alumni reunion is planned for June 17.

"We're inviting everyone who's ever sung with S.O.T. during our four-year history-everyone whose address we haveto join us for an evening to renew old friendships, recall good times making music together, and consider returning to the chorus. I think we'll have a great time," says Roth.

Sing Out Toledo! was the brainchild of Keith Pilkinton, who founded the group in the fall of 1996 after watching his sister perform in Denver's pride festival, and at the GALA Choruses Festival in Tampa earlier that year.
